How to Stop Anxiety Naturally
Looking back on my life, I cannot really remember a time during my middle-school through high-school days where I was completely confident, sure of myself and not socially shy. I have always been regarded as being: shy, quiet, self conscious, awkward, and anxious. I would always ask myself questions like:
How do I stop anxiety?
Am I normal?
Am I weird?
Do people like me?
This is a story of my personal vendetta against anxiety and how I stopped it!
I almost go to the point where I accepted that this is who I was. This is who I was going to be for the rest of my life. I guess I hit rock bottom when I failed out of college, my relationship with my girlfriend was on the rocks and I was losing friends quickly. I was in a very dark place at this point and began to pity myself. I would spend the majority of my time locked away in my room, blinds closed, isolated.
Finally, I got frustrated with this destructive lifestyle I was living. I started seeing a psychologist weekly. I also began searching for a natural anxiety cure online. Google was my friend and my worst enemy - I became obsessed. I could recite the names of neurotransmitters, the mechanisms behind anxiety (e.g. adrenaline, overactive CNS). I bored my girlfriend with my constant rants and "miracle cures" that these sites promised me. I guess at this point I had made some progress. Let me tell you what really helped me!
Please, keep reading. I know, this sounds cliché, but your diet has a direct impact on your overall mental and physical health. You can read more about this in a previous article I wrote here! To put it bluntly, the American diet sucks. It's no wonder we have so many medical problems. Disorders like ADD/ADHD are among the most over-diagnosed mental disorders. I personally believe that nutrition can and will cure almost any medical ailments. Prescription drugs treat the symptoms not the root of the problem! Here are some vital nutrients you should include in your diet:
- Vitamin B's (all of them)
- Omega 3 Fish oil
- Plenty of protein!
- Drink plenty of water!
Now these are just a few diet tips that I have noticed help me! Vitamin B's especially, specifically vitamin B3 (niacin) are very important in curing anxiety. Niacin has shown "benzodiazepine-like effects" in rats on aggression. I have personally been taking niacin on a daily basis and have noticed dramatic changes in my social anxiety!
Okay, now I'm really sounding cliché, right? I thought this was all a bunch of BS when I was researching natural cures for anxiety. Scientifically, it makes sense though. When you exercise, you release endorphins. Endorphins make you feel good and also are known to alleviate anxiety. Regular exercise helps with depression also!
Start off small! Make minor goals for yourself. Baby steps are the way to go! I started by just jogging/walking a couple blocks a day. Even the fresh air and sunshine will do wonders!
Fake confidence = real confidence
You ever hear that saying, "If you make that ugly face too many times, it'll get stuck that way!"? I think this holds true to confidence too! For me at least, I didn't know what confidence was. I knew people viewed me as insecure and awkward. I began studying the habits of confident people and starting mimicking them in my everyday life. Eventually, this will almost become second nature. Monkey see, monkey do.
This works by basically re-programming your brain in social situations. When the normal response for you would be: a, b, and c, you get used to responding with x, y, and z. Get it? Good!
